What to Expect

Personal care, clear expectations.

Some patients choose acupuncture for relaxation and personal comfort during fertility treatment. We start with your needs, not a promised pregnancy outcome.

A quiet treatment setting
01 · Listen
Time to understand your needs
Your first visit includes a health history, a Chinese medicine assessment and a discussion of your goals, comfort and current fertility care.
Chinese herbal medicine
02 · Review
Your medical plan comes first
Please share your medicines, supplements and procedure dates. Discuss any herbs or supplements with your fertility team before using them; none are automatically part of an acupuncture visit.
Calm and relaxed during treatment
03 · Personalize
Care at your pace
Tell us how you feel about needles and what would make your visit more comfortable. Acupuncture is optional, and feeling stressed does not mean you have caused a treatment to fail.
What the research tells us: Acupuncture around embryo transfer has not been shown to improve IVF live birth rates. We do not promise changes in egg quality, AMH, implantation or pregnancy outcomes. Optional comfort care is a different goal from improving fertility outcomes. Read the research and patient resources below.
Visit Planning

Acupuncture timing around your IVF cycle

A flexible plan, not a required protocol. If you choose acupuncture, we discuss timing around your preferences, procedure dates and your fertility team’s instructions.

01
Before a Cycle
Start with a conversation
Pre-cycle acupuncture preparation

You can ask about care before or during a cycle. An initial visit helps us review your history and discuss whether acupuncture fits your current plan.

02
During Stimulation
Keep us up to date
A quiet treatment room with a treatment table and soft lighting

Share medication changes, discomfort and planned retrieval dates. Your fertility clinic’s instructions take priority; an acupuncture visit may be adjusted or deferred.

03
Around Transfer
An optional visit
Embryo transfer day support

Acupuncture on transfer day is not required. Ask your fertility team about any restrictions, then contact us to discuss timing without rushing your medical appointment.

04
After Transfer
Follow your clinic’s plan
Two week wait support

Follow your clinic’s aftercare and testing schedule. Continuing acupuncture is an individual choice, not a requirement for implantation or pregnancy.

Your fertility team’s instructions come first.
Bring your procedure dates and any written instructions to your visit. Acupuncture does not replace IVF monitoring, medication or follow up with your specialist.

Thoughtful Choices

Additional therapies are a separate decision.

Herbs, supplements and bodywork are not automatically included in your acupuncture appointment. Discuss any additions with your fertility team before using them. A therapy being needle free does not establish that it is suitable at every stage of IVF.

Check suitability before adding another therapy. Discuss any proposed bodywork, herbs or supplements with your fertility team and practitioner. Suitability depends on your treatment stage, medical history and individual instructions. We do not promise that additional therapies improve implantation. See patient guidance.
IVF Acupuncture FAQ

Questions about fertility acupuncture

Practical answers before you book, from the first visit to care around embryo transfer.

Where can I find IVF acupuncture support in Pleasanton?
Flow & Heal Acupuncture offers individualized complementary acupuncture care with Xinyan Bai, L.Ac. at 1811 Santa Rita Road, Suite 108, Pleasanton, CA 94566. Book an initial acupuncture visit online, or call (925) 425-8010 with questions. We provide acupuncture care, not IVF procedures.
Which appointment should I book for my first fertility visit?
Choose Initial Acupuncture Visit, the same initial visit used for other acupuncture care. It includes a detailed health history, a Chinese medicine assessment, an individualized acupuncture treatment when appropriate, and care recommendations. Let us know you are seeking fertility support and share your current stage of treatment. You do not need a separate IVF booking category.
How should I schedule acupuncture before or after embryo transfer?
Transfer day acupuncture is optional, not a requirement. Ask your fertility clinic about any restrictions and contact us with your procedure time before scheduling. We can discuss a visit that fits your comfort and medical instructions. Research has not established a schedule that improves IVF live birth outcomes. ASRM guidance and a randomized trial explain the evidence.
Do I need to start three months before IVF?
No specific lead time has been established as necessary to improve IVF outcomes. You may request an initial consultation before or during a cycle. We discuss your history, upcoming procedures and preferences, rather than presenting a three month course as a requirement.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no single visit schedule suitable for everyone. Any proposed frequency is discussed after your assessment and can be adjusted or stopped. We do not present a package, transfer day session or ongoing treatment as necessary for implantation or pregnancy.
Does acupuncture improve IVF success, egg quality or AMH?
Research findings vary, but acupuncture around embryo transfer has not been shown to improve live birth rates compared with sham acupuncture. We do not claim that our care increases egg quality, ovarian reserve, AMH or implantation. Some patients choose visits for relaxation and personal comfort, which is a different goal from improving pregnancy outcomes. See the evidence and its limits.
Can I discuss my care in Mandarin Chinese?
Yes. Xinyan Bai, L.Ac. offers care in English and Mandarin Chinese. You are welcome to discuss your questions and preferences in either language. 可以使用普通话沟通,也可以中英文结合。初次就诊请选择 Initial Acupuncture Visit,并告知我们您目前的生育治疗阶段。
Is acupuncture safe during stimulation, after transfer or in pregnancy?
Suitability is assessed individually; acupuncture is not risk free. Please tell us your medicines, treatment stage, procedure dates, pregnancy status and any instructions from your medical team before treatment. Temporary soreness or bruising can occur, and improper treatment can cause serious harm. We use sterile disposable needles. Do not delay medical care or use acupuncture instead of your fertility clinic’s advice. Read the safety overview.
Can I ask about care during IUI or a frozen embryo transfer cycle?
Yes. You can book an initial acupuncture visit to discuss care alongside IUI, a frozen embryo transfer or other fertility treatment. Your procedure and medication plan guide the conversation. Evidence from one IVF study should not be treated as proof of benefit for every fertility treatment.
What if I have PCOS or irregular periods?
Please share your diagnosis, symptoms and current medical plan. We can discuss whether complementary acupuncture fits your goals and comfort needs. It does not replace evaluation or treatment by your gynecologist or fertility specialist, and we do not promise to normalize hormones or restore ovulation.
Does insurance cover fertility acupuncture?
Coverage must be checked for your specific plan and the reason for care. A plan covering pain related acupuncture does not establish coverage for fertility related visits. We can help review available benefits before your visit, including network and authorization requirements. Verification is not a guarantee of coverage or payment. Request a benefits check or contact the clinic before booking.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your current medication and supplement list, relevant information you wish to discuss, planned retrieval or transfer dates, and any written instructions from your fertility team. Tell us if you may be pregnant, have had a recent procedure, or have restrictions on treatment. Questions are welcome.
